AluQuébec is satisfied of tariffs imposed on China

28 August 2024

Montréal, August 28th, 2024 – As the federative organization of Québec’s aluminium industry, AluQuébec, the aluminium Cluster, salutes Ottawa’s decision in relation to the 25% customs tariffs imposed on China’s imported aluminium products.

Many reasons motivate AluQuébec’s position, including :

  •           Québec’s aluminium industry eagerly seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, and the use of Chinese aluminium would do the opposite. Hence, the tariff alignment which includes Mexico and the United States, promotes the supply of products processed here for the Mexican market which had previously used Chinese metals.
  •          This taxation is also an opportunity to replace Chinese aluminium with lower carbon footprint aluminium to manufacture more environmentally friendly aluminium products.
  •          This decision improves the conditions of the increased capacity of secondary aluminium processing and protects access to the American market while enhancing growth conditions of the primary industry in Québec.

“Undoubtedly, we have the duty to put forth our responsibly produced aluminium in every sector of our economy, whether in transportation, in sustainable construction, in infrastructures, etc. All these sectors and many more represented by AluQuébec can contribute to North America’s decarbonation by using aluminium from here. We also acknowledge that this announcement may negatively impact some companies in the industry but AluQuébec works jointly with other key players to lessen the effects of the taxation.” concludes Chief Executive Officer of AluQuébec, Mr François Racine.
