Act together to preserve and strengthen Québec aluminium in the face of the tariff crisis

Context

The United States of America are imposing a new wave of tariffs and Québec’s aluminium industry is yet again at the forefront of this commercial confrontation with major repercussions. These exceptional measures strike processing companies, menacing competitivity, investments, jobs and the perennity of strategic value chains.

To answer this urgency, AluQuébec has put forward the Al-liance Tariffs Initiative, a structured mobilization, inclusive and proactive, destined to support key players of Québec aluminium and to co-construct necessary responses today and tomorrow.

Objectives

  1. Measure in real time the impact of processing companies, especially the most vulnerable.
  2. Mobilize the industry’s stakeholders to collectively identify concrete measures adapted to regional and sectorial realities.
  3. Suggest structuring solutions in short, medium and long term to reinforce Québec’s aluminium value chain while relying on competitivity, resilience and innovation.

Execution approach

The Al-liance Tariffs Initiative is based on a rigorous approach anchored in ground realities:

  • Collection of quantitative data by targeted surveys intended to impacted companies.
  • Task forces and thematic workshops reuniting AluQuébec’s committees and Working Groups’ representatives as well as experts and sectorial partners.
  • Strategic regional meetings, starting with a first in the field gathering in Chicoutimi on June 11th to listen to preoccupations and ideas from local actors.

The Initiative’s positioning

This initiative is in continuity with the concerted efforts made by AluQuébec since January 2025. It aims to ensure a coordinated response, anchored in Québec expertise, to a menace that individually surpasses companies.

A call to action

In front of this new tariff policy offensive, it is imperative to transform this shock into a transformative lever.

  • The urgency is real. The tariffs’ impacts are immediate and call to a quick, coordinated and targeted approach.
  • Québec aluminium is a strategic asset. It supports our industrial autonomy, contributes to the energetic transition and generates structuring benefits to our region.
  • Our collective expertise is unique. We have a world-renowned know-how in terms of aluminium processing. This expertise should be protected, valued and should also evolve.
  • In the field presence, active listening. By meeting with companies around the province, AluQuébec reaffirms its catalysing role at the service of regions and the entirety of the value chain.

Recognition and perspective

We would like to emphasize the essential support of the government (Québec and Canada), whose engagement to our sector has always been crucial in times of crises. Thanks to the Al-liance Tariffs Initiative, we will provide them with reliable data and concrete recommendations to enlighten their strategic decision-making.

Together, let’s defend our aluminium. Take action. Contribute to the Al-liance Tariffs Initiative.
